Nurse Perry Handley, Superintendent of the UC School of Nursing from 1911-1913, went abroad in 1914 to direct the American Red Cross Military Hospital at Juilly, near Paris. in July 1918 she welcomed Surgical Team No. 50 to the hospital and developed a “treasured friendship” with Woolsey and the rest of the team. She escorted them over the battlefields of Marne and advised them on how to achieve greater efficiency in their care.
