San Francisco in the 60s was a hotspot of civil rights activity. San Francisco General Hospital was no exception to changes. In 1964, SFGH was expanded with 563 general beds and space for 226 psychiatric inpatients. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson passed the medicare bill, providing affordable healthcare for older adults. In 1966, SFGH was designated as San Francisco's Trauma center making it one of the only two in the country. In 1967 the Summer of Love was in full effect and with it came an increase of drug use and the increase of drug use led to an increase of violence.
